Education Overview
The main purpose of the high school system was to prepare young men to enter the Imperial University in Tokyo. Language study was at the core of the curriculum, and study of the Japanese language and literature comprised about forty per cent of it.
From one to three foreign teachers were continuously employed. Students were able to study well under outstanding teachers in small classes.
